On Monday class, one of the petit allegro exercises was the most basic steps of Mazurka --- simple steps but extremely difficult. I immediately thought of the amazing Mazurka done by a group of little girls and boys in Paquita.

We were not even 1% of it……What a shame……

A mazurka is a stylized Polish folk dance in triple meter, usually at a lively tempo that has a heavy accent on the third or second beat. Several classical composers have written mazurkas, with the best known being the 58 composed by Frédéric Chopin for solo piano.

For ballet, Mazurka is commonly used for divertissement. Tchaikovsky composed Mazurka scores for his Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty. Leo Delibes composed one in the first act of the ballet Coppelia.

Mazurka is lively, that’s the difficult part on top of the steps.
